The third legislature of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Korea has reviewed its first 100 days of activity as of June 5, 2026.

Key figures and nature of requests

  • 4,716 requests for investigation were recorded between February 26 and June 3, 2026.
  • Submissions are made directly, through local authorities or from diplomatic missions abroad.
  • Human rights violations and fabrications of evidence dominate (1,541 cases), followed by institutional detentions
  • (1,296) and civilian massacres (1,094).
  • Busan is the region most represented in Korea
  • (531 requests).
  • International requests come notably from the United States, Belgium, and France.

Next steps and organization

  • The president of the Commission, Song Sang-kyo, is committed to conducting strict investigations based on facts.
  • The recruitment of 97 agents and investigators will be finalized by July 2026 to launch the investigations.
  • The staff of the Office responsible for international adoptions and detention centers will be strengthened.
  • The submission period applications remain open to everyone until February 25, 2028.
